Many a biker has experienced the frustration of waiting for the breakdown van in a layby somewhere out in the sticks. Whether you’re riding the shiniest, latest model or a classic bike lovingly nursed back to health, riding isn’t always plain-sailing! Make sure regular servicing is one of your top priorities to avoid the inconvenience of a sunny ride day being ruined. Classic bike repairs and servicing should always be carried out by a specialist classic bike garage. Here are some of the most common issues that leave bikers stranded at the side of the road:
Plugs
A more common issue on older bikes that don’t have modern fuel-injection systems, a flooded engine or grimy spark plug will often lead to a motorcycle not starting. This will usually happen at the farthest point from home when you’ve stopped for a break and not before you set off!
Gearbox
Bike gearboxes are pretty hard-wearing but like anything over time, eventual wear and tear will take its toll. Whether the issue is a bent selector fork or a broken chain, either way you’ll be left standing at the side of the road.
Engine Management Systems
This is a problem experienced occasionally by riders of newer bikes. Modern motorcycles rely increasingly on computerised systems and whilst these do the job most of the time, when they play up, it’s unlikely to be a problem that can be fixed at the side of the road. The inner machinations of a computerised system are best left in the hands of a professional as no matter how well you ride or how beautifully maintained your bike is, if computer says ‘No’ then that’s that!
Flat Battery
With modern bikes, gone are the days of kick-starting your machine. Normally, you’ll get some notice that your battery is dying. If it takes you by surprise though, modern motorbikes are so full of electronics that you’ll have a hard time bump starting it if the battery is too drained.
Tyres
Your two wheels are one of the biggest breakdown issues faced by bikers. Even with tyres in tip top condition, it only takes one evil pothole or an unfortunately placed nail in the road and you’re brought to a sudden halt. Always make sure your tyres are in good condition before you leave home, as an unexpected event won’t feel nearly as bad as one that could have been avoided with better attention and maintenance.
Clutch
Whether you have a hydraulic system or a cable-operated clutch, just a simple fault can still leave you stranded. If your clutch is suffering from wear and tear, it should give you plenty of notice that it needs replacing. However, a broken cable or leak can bring you to a sudden and unexpected pause in your otherwise enjoyable ride. The key to safe and confident riding is to ensure your bike is regularly serviced and maintained by mechanics who know motorcycles like the backs of their hands.
