Warning Signs That your Motorbike Needs Attention

Specialist Motorbike Garage

Of course, we want our bikes to run without issue until the end of time, but alas at some point something is going to give. That sinking feeling when you hear an unexpected or unusual noise, the handling feels off or worst still, it won’t start at all. Regular servicing at a specialist motorbike garage in London is the best way to avoid these inconvenient blips in an otherwise enjoyable ride. Here are some of the indications that all might not be rosy inside your most favourite machine:

Low mpg –

If you think you’re not getting the kind of fuel efficiency that you used to get, it could be low pressure in your tyres. If your tyres are not at the optimum pressure and shape, they become not much more than resistance on the road, decreasing your mpg.
When engine oil gets dirty, it can become thick and harder to move through the engine parts. This reduces your fuel efficiency and can often be felt through stiffness in the gear shift lever and/or smoking from the exhaust.
Low mpg can also mean your carburettor needs tuning or your brakes are too tight. Either way, you’ll need a qualified mechanic to check out the reasons behind your fuel efficiency issues.

Unsatisfactory Performance –

This could be a result of a clogged and dirty air filter, particularly if you do a lot of inner city riding. Inadequate levels of engine oil can lead to performance problems, even seizing pistons and other components, causing serious damage. If a leak is spotted, have it checked over by a mechanic straight away.
A slack chain affects performance, reducing the acceleration and making the engine response feel sluggish. If you hear excess noise coming from the chain or the cover, it’s time for some greasing and tightening.
An accumulation of carbon over time can also negatively affect a bike’s performance. This will need to be rectified by a qualified mechanic as an engine decarbonisation involves removing the engine head, cleaning it and resetting the valves.

Poor Braking –

If you notice a strange noise when applying the brakes, this could indicate that it’s time to replace the brake pads. Brake fluid levels should be checked if you are suffering from inadequate disc brake performance. If levels are sufficient, a trip to the garage is recommended for air bleeding that can sharpen up the feel of the brakes and improve their overall performance.

Strange Noises –

Scraping metallic sounds even when the brakes are not being applied are a definite indication that brake pads need replacing otherwise the discs might be damaged behind repair if you continue to ride with the problem.
Rumbling sounds could be bearings in the depths of the engine, possibly the crankshaft. A squawking noise is often indicative of an issue with the clutch and ticking sounds coming from the motor could mean worn tappets. Backfiring or spitting from the tailpipe can indicate an air leak in the exhaust system.
